Teen CERT students extinguish a fire in training

Earlier this month, Lincoln County students had the opportunity to develop their emergency response skills during a Teen CERT Disaster Preparedness Day. Teen CERT, available at all four LCSD high schools, is a semester-long elective course that trains students in disaster response so they are equipped to support their school leadership if a disaster occurs, such as an earthquake, while school is in session.

The students learned essential skills through hands-on activities, including using fire simulators and live fire extinguishers at North Lincoln Fire & Rescue. They also practiced shutting off a gas meter and participated in a tsunami map workshop, gaining valuable experience in mitigating hazardous situations.

One of the most exciting parts of the day was using their skills in an earthquake-themed escape room from Shaky Grounds Cafe, a mobile educational game that teaches real-life safety tips that help prepare students for natural disasters. Students worked together to extinguish (simulated) fires, cut electricity, and solve multiple challenges, all while developing critical life skills like problem-solving, teamwork, and decision-making.

Beyond safety, Teen CERT builds confidence and leadership — preparing students to step up when it matters most. We are proud of our young responders for making a difference in our community!
