Native Youth Summit

Lincoln County School District hosted its Native Youth Summit this week, bringing together students from all LCSD high schools and Siletz Charter School for a day focused on empowerment, cultural connection, and student leadership.

The event opened with an address and activity from Superintendent Tolan where students were asked to provide feedback on school policies, including the variance policy. Their ideas and recommendations will be forwarded to LCSD's Equity Committee for consideration and potential policy changes.

This type of student input has already led to real change in the district. Two years ago, Native American students advocated for a day of learning on Indigenous People's Day — something the district implemented following that feedback.

Following Superintendent Tolan's address, students participated in breakout sessions covering a range of topics including:

  • Lincoln County Crisis: Culture, Sacred Space, and knowing Available Supports

  • PAADA: Grant Programs and Open Response

  • Behavioral Health: Wellness Through Medicine Wheel Techniques

  • Care Program: Healthy Relationships vs. Unhealthy Relationships

  • Dr. Tiffany Stuart-Whiterock and Adam Whiterock: Creative Expression through Handstick Game Making

  • Chemawa Ambassador Shaynice Moss: Native Youth

  • Siletz Farm: Healthy Traditions

After the breakout sessions, students participated in traditional Native games. Thank you to all the organizers, session facilitators, and Native Youth who attended the summit!
