Preparing for Winter Weather

As winter approaches, we want to remind families, students, and staff how Lincoln County School District evaluates weather conditions and communicates any changes to the school schedule.

Because our district spans a wide range of elevations, weather can vary significantly across communities. Safety is at the center of every decision we make about opening, delaying, or closing schools.

What Different Weather Decisions Mean

School Closure

School buildings are closed for the day due to weather or another emergency. Unless noted otherwise, all evening activities and meetings are canceled.

Delayed Start

Schools open later than usual, typically with a two-hour delay. Buses run two hours later than their normal schedule.

Bus Snow Routes

When higher elevations experience snow or ice, buses may operate on alternate snow routes. These routes help keep students safe and may reduce the need for full school closures. Snow routes may include different pickup locations and times and are posted on our district website.

Early Release

Schools may close early if conditions worsen during the day. Evening activities are also canceled unless otherwise noted.

When and How Decisions Are Made

Notifications about delays or closures are usually shared early in the morning, with a goal of making and announcing decisions by 6 a.m.

When assessing winter weather, district staff consider many factors, including students who walk to school, students waiting at bus stops, and the safety and accessibility of drop-off locations, sidewalks, and parking lots. We also take into account the wide variety of terrain our buses travel each day.

Assessments may include:

  • Driving affected areas to review road conditions

  • Checking school facilities to confirm safe access for students and staff

  • Monitoring NOAA weather forecasts

  • Communicating with local and state road departments

  • Coordinating with local and regional law enforcement agencies

How Families Will Be Notified

Once a decision is made, families and staff will receive information through:

  • An alert banner on the LCSD website and school websites

  • An LCSD App message to all students, parents, guardians, and staff

  • District social media pages

  • Local media stations

Other Causes of School Closures

Weather is the most common reason for closures, but other emergencies such as power outages, flooding, or heating issues may also require adjustments.

What Families Can Do

If inclement weather is forecasted, please check our communication channels before leaving home. Thank you for your patience and partnership in keeping students and staff safe.
