The final LCSD elementary science field exploration event of the school year was held yesterday morning at the Lincoln City Demonstration Garden at Oregon Coast Community College. Developed and maintained by the Lincoln County Master Gardeners Association, the garden provided Oceanlake Elementary first graders with a hands-on opportunity to explore plant science and environmental stewardship in an outdoor learning setting.
Students spent the morning planting and watering vegetables and flowers they grew from seed in their classrooms, participating in a scavenger hunt, and exploring the garden ecosystem around them. Throughout the experience, students investigated the diversity of plants, what plants need to survive, and how gardeners care for plants in a shared community space. Students also participated in observational journaling, data collection, and analysis activities connected to their classroom learning.
The goal of the field experience was to help students answer the question: “How do we provide what plants need in a garden?” The event was part of LCSD’s elementary science field exploration program, which gives students opportunities to engage in hands-on, place-based learning experiences throughout Lincoln County.
Lincoln County School District would like to thank the many partners who helped make this year’s elementary science field experiences possible, including Oregon Coast Aquarium, Oregon Coast STEM Hub, Oregon Parks and Recreation Department Beverly Beach Management Area, Lincoln County Master Gardeners Association, Seven Capes Bird Alliance, Oregon Parks and Recreation Department South Beach Management Unit, Cascade Head Biosphere Collaborative, Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife STEP Program, Oregon Shores, MidCoast Watersheds Council, Yakona Nature Preserve & Learning Center, Oregon Sea Grant, and Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area. @oregoncoastcommunitycollege
