More than 70 Lincoln County School District students in grades K-8 recently participated in Young Athletes Day, an annual Special Education event that celebrates movement, inclusion, and connection. The event, now in its third year, was supported by a partnership with Special Olympics, which provided equipment for the day's activities as well as pizza, fruit, and snacks for participants and staff.

Students rotated through a dozen activity stations with the help of 40 Newport High School student leadership volunteers, who assisted with running the events and encouraging participants throughout the day.

"This is always a favorite activity for students and, for many, it's their first time going on a field trip with their class," said Ollie Richardson, LCSD Adaptive Physical Education Specialist. "Many students get to reconnect with past teachers and friends while interacting in a positive and supportive environment."

Richardson said the event is about much more than physical activity.

"Many social interactions happen during the event where you get to witness students helping each other, being kind, and showing compassion for others," Richardson said. "Being able to witness this life-changing event brings joy to all."
